The Harsh Reality of Street Children in DRC

The Democratic Republic of Congo is the largest country in Sub-Saharan Africa, but it ranks among the lowest in the Human Development Index. For over 25 years, ongoing conflict has displaced millions, creating widespread food insecurity and malnutrition. The country also hosts 527,000 refugees from neighboring regions, adding to the strain on its limited resources.

In cities like Lubumbashi, street children—locally known as shegues—face unimaginable hardships. These children are often victims of abuse, neglect, or harmful accusations like witchcraft. Rejected by their families and society, they are left to fend for themselves on the streets, where survival is a daily battle.

Even when rehabilitation programs exist, many children return to the streets due to inadequate psychological care and poor conditions in shelters.

The Vision of Fondation Maman Paradis (FMP)

In response to this dire situation, FMP launched the Centre de Formation Professionnelle FMP. This initiative focuses on providing street children with:

  • One hot meal daily, ensuring they have the nutrition needed to survive.
  • Education and skill-building opportunities, paving the way for a brighter future.
  • A supportive environment, addressing the psychological and social challenges they face.

The campaign is a lifeline for children who would otherwise remain forgotten and trapped in a cycle of poverty and alienation.
